The number of registered voters in Arizona continues to rise by the thousands while party numbers shift, according to new registration data.

With more than 14,000 new registered voters since July, more Arizonans are showing an interest in local elections.

According to the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office, Democratic registrants increased by nearly 1,800 voters, Republicans by 4,500 and independents by more than 8,000 new voters.

Secretary of State Michele Reagan said this year’s voter interest is a great sign for Arizona’s local and state elections.

“The fact that we are seeing more people register in what’s called an off election year is incredibly thrilling," Reagan said. "It just shows that more people are getting involved. More people care what’s happening. It just shows there’s a lot more enthusiasm than there might not be sometimes in non-election years.”

Reagan said a string of close elections in the state may be driving interest in voter registration.
