The relationship between the Trump administration and the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities — or HBCUs — has been a tense one since he first took office.

In February, President Trump met in the oval office with the presidents of some of those HBCUs and announced an initiative in which oversight of the schools would be done by the White House, not the Department of Education.

This week, seven months later, the Trump administration named an executive director for the White House Initiative on HBCUs: lawyer and former NFL player Johnathan Holifield. It’s a move that is getting mixed reactions.

I talked to Adam Harris, who covered this meeting for the Chronicle of Higher Education. He told me more about Holifield and why the relationship between the Trump administration and HBCUs is so tense.
