Governor Jan Brewer says federal officials are continuing to
refuse her request to re-open the Grand Canyon
with state funds. She says she is continuing to speak with officials in
Washington in
an effort to re-open the park.
“There’s ongoing conversations,” Brewer said. “Things are a
lot different than they were years ago when we faced the same dilemma. We’re
trying to deal with it reasonably.”
Grand Canyon National Park
represents hundreds of millions of dollars of economic activity to the state
and is one of the casualties of the government shutdown. Park Superintendent
Dave Uberauga says federal officials have determined the national parks are
core operations of government and that they will not be re-opened during the
government closure.
