Buckeye, the seventh-fastest growing city in the country, wants to raise property taxes.

The City Council has scheduled a public hearing on the proposal for June 20.

If approved, Buckeye would raise property taxes by roughly 3.5 percent. City officials estimate the increase would bring in about $228,000 to the general fund.

The money would primarily go to public safety. Both the police and fire department want to add new positions. The city also wants to expand the cemetery, replace public-safety vehicles and upgrade facilities.

Census data show Buckeye’s population jumped 4.8 percent between 2015 and 2016.

City records suggest the trend continues. There was a 46 percent increase in the number of single-family home permits issued during the first four months of this year.
