Tempe Police's Safe And Sober Campaign Has A Busy Second Weekend

August 26, 2013

Tempe police said they were even busier the second weekend of their campaign to crack down on underage drinking. Many of those detained were college students. Officers arrested 486 people last weekend. That is 100 more than the previous weekend. A department spokesman said many of those arrested were  Arizona State University students.

Police said there was a slight drop in the number of DUIs, but the average blood alcohol content for those charged with drunk driving was above .15. At that level, the charge becomes an extreme DUI with tougher penalties.

Officers from agencies across the Valley are taking part in Tempe’s effort. They issued more than 900 citations altogether mostly for alcohol violations. Police said the enhanced enforcement will run once again over the Labor Day weekend.
