Arizona’s senior Sen. John McCain, a frequent GOP critic of President Trump, said he regrets Trump's decision to fire FBI director James Comey.

McCain disputes the rationale behind the firing and doesn’t believe the Trump Administration’s claim that Comey was fired because of mistakes made in the Hillary Clinton email investigation.

He also said he feels the termination was poorly handled.

"Obviously it was not done in an efficient fashion," McCain said. "When you fire probably, arguably, the most respected person in America, you'd better have a very good explanation, and so far I haven't seen that."

McCain, who calls the whole thing an unnecessary distraction, is one of the few Republicans publicly asking for the appointment of a special committee for the investigation into possible ties between Russia and the Trump campaign.
