Arizona GOP Lawmakers Work To Defund Planned Parenthood
Republican legislative leaders are using a provision buried in the state budget in an attempt to defund Planned Parenthood.
Gov. Doug Ducey said it wasn’t his idea, but he supports the plan to pull $2 million in Title X money from the women’s health clinics.
House Speaker, Republican J.D. Mesnard said Republican legislators have long tried to divert funding to health care providers that aren't abortion providers.
With President Trump’s changes in federal Title X requirements, conservative legislators now have a loophole for Arizona to bypass Planned Parenthood in its state budget plans.
Bryan Howard with Planned Parenthood Arizona criticized the GOP plan.
"There is one, and only one, reason that this is in the budget: for Gov. Ducey to continue to double down on his determination to expunge Planned Parenthood from the landscape," Howard said.
Democratic Rep. Ken Clark, said he sees the change being pushed by GOP leadership in simple financial terms.
Clark said if the health department is suddenly charged with accepting, reviewing and awarding grant applications it will likely have to hire additional staff, at taxpayer expense.
