Telescope Array Could Come To Northern Arizona

August 14, 2013

Northern Arizona could be the new home a large astronomy project. Cherenkov Telescope Array 40 telescopes could generate more than $100 million for the area. Potential sites for the array of 40 telescopes include Mexico and the Spanish Canary Islands, but the big news in Arizona is that spots around Seligman and Meteor Crater are also in the running. Both sites have the needed dark skies, high elevation and lack of excessive wind.

According to the Arizona Daily Sun, the array is being planned by an international scientific group based in Europe. The Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff would likely manage the array if Arizona is chosen. That would bring a visitors center and up to 30 jobs to the area.

A decision on the array’s location is expected by the end of the year
