Oak Creek Canyon

Visitors to Oak Creek Canyon will soon have much needed cellphone coverage.

The vote was controversial because despite strong opposition from residents, the Coconino County Board of supervisors unanimously voted to in favor of building the cell tower.

It will be located on a designated scenic corridor popular with tourists. But residents say it will be placed too close to homes, and the company building the tower has not done enough to find alternative locations.

However, it was argued, the installation will help to improve public safety.
