'Blackfish' Documentary Opens in Arizona On Aug. 9

July 29, 2013

The documentary film 'Blackfish,' about Tilikum, the now infamous orca responsile for three deaths while in captivity at Sea World, opened in limited release this weekend.

The film looks at the death of a Sea World trainer in 2010 and shows orcas being captured, as babies. Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite says her investigation was a real eye opener,

“I feel that it would be a good thing if people come out of it shocked and angered, because that’s very much how I felt when I started learning the truth,” Cowperthwaite said. “I think that it should raise questions and kind of encourage a debate.”

The film opens in Scottsdale and Tucson on Aug. 9. Sea World sent out letters disputing its accuracy to 40 film critics but declined to be interviewed for the film, and repeated attempts for comment for this story, went unanswered.
