Grand Canyon Guide Struck By Lightning

July 23, 2013

Park rangers at the Grand Canyon are warning visitors to be on the alert for thunderstorms after a river guide was struck by lightning. Spokeswoman Kirby-Lynn Shedlowski, says the guide had to be airlifted out of the canyon Sunday night.

“It was a lightning strike,” Shedlowski said. “It’s still unknown right now as to whether the individual was struck or it was a residual impact.”

Shedlowski says while lightning strikes at the bottom of the canyon are rare, they are fairly common on both canyon rims.
