Prehistoric-Era Hohokam Village Unearthed In Marana
The remnants of a prehistoric-era village have been uncovered at the site of planned mall in southern Arizona.
The Arizona Daily Star reported Sunday that archaeologists have excavated 7 acres of a 40-acre area where Tucson Premium Outlets is set to go.
Tom Motsinger, whose Phoenix archaeological firm oversaw the excavation, says the remains include more than 250 human burials connected to the Hohokam tribe.
Motsinger says they date to 650 to 900 A.D. and were found from a depth of 4 feet.
Researchers say they will compare the site to 20 other Hohokam sites to put together a pattern of the tribe's early civilization.
The excavation was conducted from April to June under an agreement.
Burial objects will be reinterred per the wishes of living descendants.
