Dean Peak Fire grows to 5400 acres but sees progress

July 05, 2013

Residents of about 350 homes in northwestern Arizona remain evacuated this morning, as firefighters battle the Dean Peak wildfire, in the Hualapai Mountains. Spokeswoman Jan Bardwell said the blaze has grown to about 5400 acres, but that some progress has been made.

"The south and east side of the fire is doing fairly well,” Bardwell said. “It held through the wind, but it certainly isn’t completely out or cold in that area.”

Bardwell said no structures have been damaged by the flames.

Along the Arizona-Mexico border, a wildfire that has charred more than a square mile of rugged territory has been fully contained. Coronado National Forest officials said the W-2 Fire burned about 530 acres of brush and oak on the U.S. side and another 200 acres south of the border, since being sparked last week. Drops of fire retardant are helping slow its spread.
