Officials Plan To Spray Buffelgrass In Saguaro National Park
Saguaro National Park outside Tucson plans herbicide spraying this week on parts of the park where invasive buffelgrass has become established.
A helicopter will be used to spray the non-native plants in parts of the park that are too dangerous or too remote to reach by foot.
Areas to be treated are in the Rincon Mountains east of Tucson and the Tucson mountains west of the city.
Spraying is planned from Aug. 19-26.
Buffelgrass is not only invasive but highly flammable, and park officials say it can help small fires spread out of control and engulf native plants. Its spread also forces out native plants, wildlife habitat and food.
Several trails in the park's Tucson mountain district of the park will be closed while the spraying is being done.
