Halfway Fire contained

June 20, 2013

Fire crews have contained the Halfway Fire burning near Tusayan on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The Halfway Fire broke out Wednesday, and crews managed to contain the blaze by Thursday afternoon. Firefighters caught a break as the flames moved into areas that had burned earlier either due to naturally occurring wildfires or prescribed fires.

286 acres did burn. No structures were threatened. Investigators believe the fire was human caused, but no word yet on exactly how it started.

Grandview Point at the Grand Canyon which had been closed is now reopened.
