ADOT communication employees come up with these unconventional safety signs.

ADOT tries to come up with humorous signs so drivers will talk about safety on the roadway.

It started with “peas and guac”… and more than a year later, the Arizona Department of Transportation is still coming up with the unconventional safety messages dotting the Valley’s freeways.

The latest Star Wars movie "Rogue One" is now playing in theaters, and so is ADOT’s latest message — Don’t Turn Your Car Into a Death Star.

These quirky safety messages are now a regular occurrence on Valley freeways. They also take planning and a dose of creativity.

"Once we have those opportunities or dates nailed down," says Doug Pacey, who is with ADOT. "There’s about a half-dozen people who are regularly involved in the creation of the messages ... but anyone in ADOT communications can submit an idea. Everyone knows what’s going on in that respect."

Pacey says they don’t want the messages to become white noise, so, he says they’ll continue to keep things interesting because they want people to talk about being safe and smart on the road.
