The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed the first locally transmitted case of Zika in the US outside the Miami area, and it’s in Texas.

For what is referred to as "local transmission" to have occurred in Texas, means someone who was infected with Zika went to Texas, was bitten by a local mosquito, then that mosquito, now carrying Zika, bit someone else.

Jessica Rigler with the Public Health Preparedeness department at the Arizona Department of Health Services said they don’t know where the Texas case came from originally. "And that really underscores the importance for our travelers, if you are someone who is traveling to an area with ongoing spread of Zika, it is so, so important that you protect yourself from mosquito bites for at least 3 weeks after you return. Because that helps protect our Arizona mosquitos from getting zika, which in turn helps protect our community."

Now the area travelers need to be careful about, includes southern Texas.

But Rigler said there’s no need for extra worry. The infection happened in a town on the Mexican border, and the Arizona Department of Health Services started monitoring and preparing for Zika in Arizona earlier in the year.
