Maricopa County Animal Care and Control is in the process of undergoing dramatic changes.

Over the summer, the agency laid off 11 people as part of dealing with a $2 million budget shortfall. That came a few months after the longtime leader resigned.

Now a new director, Mary Martin, has taken over. We spoke with Martin about her goals, Maricopa County’s unique challenges and how many pets she has.
