New figures from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis show Arizona’s per capita personal income is below the national figure.

Arizona came in at just over $39,000 and, while that’s a slight increase from the previous year, the per capita income nationwide was just over $48,000.

Economist George Hammond with the University of Arizona said the state’s ranking is likely to drop even more.

“It's not that we're more concentrated in low-wage jobs than the national economy," Hammond said. "It's that our wages are lower than the national economy.''

There are other factors too.

One economist attributed the per capita income to the fact that manufacturing jobs are disappearing and being replaced with leisure and hospitality jobs, which typically pay less.

Gov. Doug Ducey’s spokesperson said his boss is aware of the problem and the need to diversify the state’s economy.
