Thousands of immigrant children were detained along the United States-Mexico border last month. Hundreds of them were transferred to a detention facility in Nogales. As a result, the Guatemalan government will soon open a consulate office in Tucson.

Jimena Diaz, consul general for Guatemala in Phoenix, said her government is in need of a consul near the border in response to the increased number of immigrants.

“So it’s very difficult if you are working here in Phoenix, because to go to Nogales is three hours, and we have been doing that," Diaz said. "But, it’s a long trip. So it’s much better to have an office there.”

Diaz said the new office will have two experienced representatives from Guatemala working at the new office.
