Veterans Day parade organizers say parade will go on

April 15, 2013

It has been unclear whether there would be a Veterans Day parade this year after local Veterans Affairs officials said the VA has pulled its support from this year’s parade. But organizers are now saying say they are confident the parade will go on.

After meeting with Phoenix city officials this afternoon, Katherine Brooks, president of Honoring Arizona’s Veterans, the nonprofit that runs the parade, said she is confident there will be a parade this year.

“The city of Phoenix has always had a role in logistical support for our parade, much like all the other parades,” Brooks said. "They have stepped up that support in helping us to determine logistical changes due to the changes in our relationship with the VA.”

Three weeks ago, local VA officials told the event organizers they would no longer provide the support they did in the past, which threw the fate of this year’s parade into question.

Brooks says the VA has never provided funding for the parade, and the City of Phoenix will not be picking up the tab for the event this year.
