The concrete structure off of the Loop 101 on Frye Street may finally disappear.

What some might call an "eyesore" started in 2008 as a Renaissance sports hotel, but development never progressed past the skeletal concrete building. The Chandler City Planning and Zoning Commission will vote Thursday to rezone the land for future development.

City planning staff member Jodie Novak said the proposed development fits with the economic and land-use goals set by the city, but can’t say how it will develop once approved.

“If the developer feels he is going to have a successful project, whether it is successful or not falls within the private developer," Novak said. "The city envisions land use, and even if the land use was permitted for a restaurant, we can’t guarantee if that restaurant will stay in business or not.”

If passed, the 26 acres will become home to an apartment complex, two office buildings, retail space and a parking structure. The planning commission will then pass their recommendation to the city council that will vote on the measure July 10.
