Arizona third graders will soon learn if they are moving on to the next grade.

According to results from the AzMERIT test, 1,384 students did not meet the mandatory standard. That means about 2 percent of students failed the mandatory Move On When Reading standard needed to jump to the next grade.

Arizona Department of Education spokesperson, Alexis Burkhart, said that number will likely drop because of different exemptions such as special education students and English Language Learners.

“There were just about 87,000 students that tested and this is 1,384 that did move on in reading that did test into this category,” she said. “And the exceptions are not taken into account.”

Burkhart said they were pleased with the 51 percent reduction in failed tests compared to 2015.
