Arizona to take part in One Billion Rising

February 06, 2013

Arizona will be part of a global event taking place in 189 countries on Valentine's Day. It's an effort to end violence against women everywhere.

It's the idea of author/activist Eve Ensler, who decided serious attention needed to be brought to the issue.  The event is called One Billion Rising.

"One in three women, all over the planet, will be raped or beaten or abused in her lifetime. One in three people, that makes for one billion people on the planet," said Susan Singer, one of the organizers.

Events are planned in metro Phoenix, Tucson, Green Valley, Prescott, Sedona and Flagstaff, where men and women are being asked "to dance, to strike, to rise."  The events are free and open to the public. There's more at onebillionrising.org.
