Last month, Attorney General Mark Brnovich shook up the red light camera world when he issued an opinion saying that any third party operator of those systems must have a private investigator’s license.

The opinion went against a previous one issued in 2010.

Initially, Redflex, one of the companies that contracts with law enforcement, said it would not change any of its operations. But responding to requests from its clients — local law enforcement — the company has indeed stopped handing over data for now and will be applying for a license.

It’s still unclear, however, whether drivers who get photographed for speeding during this time period will eventually get a ticket, or not.
