Happy Sunshine Week! How Are Arizona Lawmakers Celebrating?
It’s Sunshine Week, a national initiative by the American Society of News Editors to educate the public about the importance of open government.
How are Arizona lawmakers observing?
- Senate President Andy Biggs does not keep a calendar, but his staff released his emails for the week, apparently unredacted.
- House Speaker David Gowan released a calendar that redacted the subject of some meetings but included attendees.
- Democratic House and Senate leaders also said they would comply, but said their small staffs had not yet reviewed and released all the documents.
- The governor's office provided unredacted calendars and emails, although it appears Gov. Doug Ducey sent no emails and most he received were form letters.
Arizona's public records law applies broadly to the governor and Legislature, as well as any elected official. It requires records to be released in most instances, though there are some exemptions.
