President Obama’s budget for Fiscal Year 2017 includes $75 million for construction of the Tempe Streetcar Project.

The project is one of 31 transportation projects in 18 states recommended to receive federal money. Congress must ultimately approve the funding.

The three mile streetcar line would connect downtown Tempe to Arizona State University and nearby neighborhoods. It is expected to cost $177 million.

Construction should begin next year and be running in 2019.
