With the new year comes new laws.

One going into effect in Arizona will waive vehicle registration fees for the families of fallen police officers and firefighters.

Steve Elliot with the Arizona Department of Transportation says it’s a way of expressing gratitude to those who died while serving the community.

Elliot said those who qualify fall into specific groups.

"That includes spouses for as long as he or she remains unmarried; children under the age of 18; an unmarried full-time student who’s at least 18 years of age, and under 23 years of age; and also unmarried dependents who suffer from disabilities," he said.

Another restriction includes only allowing one car to be registered fee-free per fallen responder.
