Norma Munoz is a longtime school board member who was just appointed to the state House.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has selected a longtime neighborhood activist to replace a state lawmaker. Norma Munoz was tapped on Monday to finish the term of Democratic State Rep. Ruben Gallego who resigned to run for Congress.

Munoz also is a Democrat, and she was recommended to replace Gallego by a three-member citizens’ panel appointed by the supervisors. The board then voted unanimously to appoint her to the state house.

Munoz has been a community organizer in South Phoenix for more than two decades. She has also been a member of the Roosevelt Elementary School Board since 1994.

She was sworn in Monday and has already filed her paperwork to run in the 2014 primary. Two other nominees who were not selected have also said they will run for the House seat in the August Democratic primary election.
