Phoenix receives federal funding to hire more firefighters

August 13, 2012

The city of Phoenix is getting $4.4 million dollars from the federal government to hire 28 firefighters.

They'll replace the firefighters whose positions were eliminated when the city cut $80 million from its budget. The money, from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will be used to help staff emergency units in accordance with national fire-protection standards.

Phoenix has also lost firefighters in recent years due to attrition. City officials have said they need help to maintain four-man engine crews.
