McCain, Kyl endorse Jeff Flake for Senate

July 13, 2012

Jeff Flake’s campaign for Senate got a major boost today-- both of Arizona’s sitting Senators gave him their endorsement.

Flake is a Republican member of the U.S. House, representing Arizona’s Congressional District 6. He’s facing off against businessman Wil Cardon for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat held by Jon Kyl, who’s retiring.

Kyl and Sen. John McCain announced their endorsements at a news conference in Phoenix on Friday. Kyl said Flake would be a strong advocate for Arizona.

"It is important for Arizona in these very difficult times to elect somebody to the United States Senate who can do the job from day one, who knows how to do it, and has demonstrated that he can do it," Kyl said, "and that person in this race is Jeff Flake."

Opponent Cardon was quick to shoot back, dismissing the move as members of Washington’s “old guard” sticking together.

Flake and Cardon will face off in the Republican Senate primary on Aug. 28. The winner will face Democratic opponent Richard Carmona, a former U.S. Surgeon General, in the November general election.
