Arizona Leaders Split On Iran Nuclear Deal

The U.S. Congress is poised to vote on the Iran nuclear deal and the Arizona delegation is split along party lines.

Democrat Raul Grijalva supports the agreement, saying it should get the benefit of the doubt but should not be seen as legitimizing the Iranian government.

“Their bad behavior, nobody’s ignoring that. That’s Iran and when you’re run by a theocracy that’s what happens. So, I’m not ignoring that nor do I think that this treaty somehow validates that Iran is a good neighbor. They’re not,” Grijalva said.

But Republican Matt Salmon is staunchly against approving the nuclear agreement.

“The whole rationale of surprise inspections and being able to go anywhere, anyhow, anytime was not met. It’s managed inspections and there’s too much room for an entity that I deeply distrust, Iran, to cheat the system,” Salmon said.

The House is expected to reject the deal but the votes to overturn a presidential veto are not expected to be there, in the U.S. Senate.
