Metrocenter mall in north Phoenix has had its share of ups and downs. Now crews are demolishing the old Broadway Southwest Department Store to make way for a Wal-Mart Supercenter — and possibly a comeback.

The once popular anchor store on the south side of the mall, just across the way from Castle’s N’ Coasters, is literally a shell of its former self. The interior has been completely gutted. Crews are expected to tear down the exterior walls in the coming weeks. Once the dust settles, Wal-Mart will start building its newest store.

"This is a Wal-Mart customer market. It’s the highest density in all of Phoenix, and has an income level very attune to Wal-Mart brand," said Warren Fink, COO of the Carlyle Development Group, the company that bought the mall in 2012.

Fink said Carlyle is trying to bring another big retailer to the mall. That deal is currently in negotiations.

Wal-Mart will open its doors sometime in mid-2016.
