Measure Would Allow Religion As A Justification For Actions
A bill that would allow you to invoke your religion as a defense in court has cleared a state Senate Committee and is headed to the floor. The measure would allow the courts to consider a person’s faith as a justifiable basis for their actions in court.
Republican Gail Griffin says people should be able to honor their personal feelings, but Minority Leader Anna Tovar argues the bill just opens the door to discrimination.
“This opens up a litany of discrimination within our state,” Tovar said. “From not only being discriminated against as an employer, I mean, we’re extending into service for food, service for renting a home.”
