Final preparations are underway for the Waste Management Phoenix Open, with tournament play set to begin Thursday.

Spokesman Rob Myers says the forecast, for highs in the mid-70s to 80 degrees, mean the tournament could once again attract record crowds. Yet he says new security procedures will be in effect for the tournament.

“All the fans attending the tournament will be wanded with metal detectors,” Myers said. “In addition to that, no backpacks or purses larger than six inches by six inches by six inches are allowed.”

Also on the list of banned items are lawn chairs. Myers says every tournament on the PGA tournament is following security procedures similar to those in effect during NFL games. Here in Phoenix, he says the security checks will take place before people board buses to the tournament site, in an effort to speed entrance into the tournament grounds.
