Phoenix City Council Considers New Recycling Program
The city of Phoenix is hoping to encourage residents to recycle more by offering them a smaller curbside trash container, starting this summer.
The city council considered the "Pay-as-You-Throw" program at its policy session Tuesday. The plan is to offer residents the option of a 65-gallon barrel or a 90-gallon container. It would inform people about the program during neighborhood group or homeowner’s association meetings between now and the start of the program, which is expected to be in late July.
People who opt for the smaller containers will see a small savings on their monthly bills. Up to 15,000 households are expected to initially choose the smaller containers. The city plans to spend some $650,000 to buy those cans, with the money coming from user fees and charges.
