State Investigating Elk Poaching In Northern Ariz.

December 13, 2013

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Game and Fish Department is looking for whoever was responsible for the poaching of four cow elk earlier this month.

Officials said the elk were killed about one-quarter of a mile off State Route 89A across from the Oak Creek Vista overlook on the Coconino National Forest. They say it happened the morning of Dec. 7 during an antlerless elk season.

An investigating officer said hunters in the area reported hearing more than a dozen gunshots. The officer found that one of the elk had been gutted and dragged to what is believed to be a silver pickup. The other elk were within 75 yards.

Wildlife manager Lee Luedeker called the killings senseless.
