City of Tucson to pay railroad for water main break

The Tucson City Council has approved a $990,000 settlement to Union Pacific Railroad for water main break. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Lynn Kelly reports.

The settlement resolves a lawsuit Union Pacific filed following the massive water main break in its rail yard over two years ago.

In May 2010, a Tucson city worker blue-staked for a waterline in the rail yard and the wrong spot was marked. The error caused a Union Pacific contractor doing some excavation work to hit a 30-inch water main that dumped nearly 11 million gallons of water at the site.

Tucson City Attorney Mike Rankin says the settlement paperwork should be finalized within two weeks.
