Arizona state Rep. Kevin Payne wants to improve school safety by installing livestream cameras that first responders could access in emergency situations.

Payne introduced a similar bill in February that would have appropriated $9.5 million to the Arizona Department of Public Safety to install the communication system in schools.

"That would save a lot of time rather than waiting on-site for blueprints or trying to figure out the layout of the building," said Payne. "If they have cameras inside the school, they’d be able to see what was happening via those camera views. I think that would be highly beneficial rather than going into somewhere unknown.”

Payne says the technology could help police assess a violent situation, or assist firefighters in responding to a blaze. He is still in the process of writing the bill but he hopes it is ready before the next legislative session.
