Mesa officials have broken ground on a new development at SkyBridge Arizona at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

The city is calling it the nation’s first joint U.S. and Mexico inland port and customs processing hub.

The first two buildings, constructed for industrial use and an aviation hangar, are expected to be completed sometime in 2020.

Bill Jabjiniak, director of economic development for the city of Mesa, said the goal is for SkyBridge to become an international air cargo hub.

"It’s a chance to enable e-commerce companies, manufacturers and others doing business with Mexico and Latin America in general to move product efficiently and cost-effectively between our two countries," Jabjiniak said.

He said they are also targeting the aviation and defense industries.

SkyBridge is privately funded through partnership including the city of Mesa and Mesa-Gateway Airport.
