Schools in the Phoenix area are responding to last week's mass shooting in Connecticut. KJZZ's Nadine Arroyo Rodriguez reports districts are reaching out to parents to assure them of the security measures in place.

The Kyrene School District in Tempe and the Higley Unified School District in Gilbert have sent emails to parents reminding them of the schools' security guidelines. Kyrene administrators, for example, told parents their schools are monitored by video 24 hours a day and all exterior doors to classrooms are locked during the day.

Schools are also making staff availble for parents with questions about safety measures, and are offering counseling. The notices come after a gunman killed 26 students and staff members Friday at a Connecticut elementary school. Higley school district also informed its parents of a community forum it will host after the holidays to discuss additional security measures they will put in place.
