Diplomatic plates may not have been factor in Mexico shooting

Mexican federal police involved in the shooting of two American agents last month may not have noticed that car’s U.S. diplomatic plates.

In late August, two reported employees of the CIA were in a bulletproof SUV, speeding along a rural road in Mexico. Mexican federal police noticed the car, but -- an official said Monday -- didn’t notice the diplomatic plates. The two American agents shot suffered non-life-threatening wounds and are now back in the U.S.

The anonymous Mexican official who offered details on the incident said federal police were searching for kidnappers who, one day earlier, had abducted a government archeological employee in the same area.

A dozen federal police are being held under a form of house arrest pending possible charges in the shooting of the U.S. agents.
