There’s a new effort to keep state lawmakers from taking action on any legislation that would benefit them or their families. Paperwork for a new ballot measure was filed Tuesday with the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office.

Andrew Chavez is behind the proposal. He said legislators wouldn’t be able to propose or vote on anything in which they have a "direct and substantial financial interest."

"When legislators take office and they sit at their desk and make votes, we just don't want them to be thinking about their self interest," Chavez said. "We want them thinking about Arizona's interest."

The measure does have some exceptions. For example, it would allow all legislators to vote on the state budget and changes in tax laws.
