On Eve Of State Of The Union, Activists Protest A Massive Border Wall
A group of activists along the Mexican border met Tuesday to blast the president’s proposed border wall construction, currently ensnared in an immigration proposal that would also provide legal status for nearly 2 million people.
The meeting fell along partisan lines with those present staunchly opposed to the creation of a massive wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Christian Ramirez is director of the Southern Border Communities Coalition in San Diego.
"The current debate in Congress, which pits border communities against dreamers, it’s not the right approach," he said.
The White House proposal would provide legal status to 1.8 million people eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program created by President Barack Obama.
It would also provide a $25 billion trust fund for the creation of a border wall. it would also do away with the family sponsorship visa program.
President Donald Trump is expected to address the wall project and his proposed immigration plan in tonight's State of the Union speech.
