Supporters of a ballot initiative to determine if Tucson officially becomes a “sanctuary city” turned in more than 12,000 valid signatures earlier this month — far surpassing the required number of nearly 9,200.

But the Pima County Republican Party has filed a suit challenging the signatures for multiple reasons, stating, in part, that paid signature gatherers didn’t fill out their forms correctly. The initiative and the attempt to stop it are just two more examples of the current tense immigration fight.

For more on the initiative effort and the fight to keep it off the ballot, The Show spoke with Jim Nintzel, executive editor of Tucson Weekly and Tucson Local Media.
