Chandler will begin a $5.4 million road expansion by the end of this year to prepare for the expansion of an Intel factory.

The new $7 billion Intel computer chip factory, called Fab 42, is expected to create more than 1,000 new jobs to the area.

“It will be the largest manufacturing perhaps in the world, certainly in Arizona, if not the United States, to produce the state-of-the-art chips," said Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke.

Road construction on Old Price Road on the western end of the Ocotillo campus will begin by the end of this year to prepare for growth at a future Intel plant.

Hartke said the new road will alleviate traffic for the current 11,000 Intel employees and extend access for the Gila River Indian Community as well.

“We have people who are out in the West Valley. They're going to be super excited when this 202 comes in Chandler and manufacturing and other jobs," Hartke said. "But Intel has people living really all throughout the Valley as far as Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, Maricopa that commute into Chandler.”

The road construction is expected to be completed by next spring.
