9 O'clock Jazz Special for 10/28

Trumpeter Clifford Brown had a sound that has inspired generations of trumpet players.  It's soulful and forceful and speaks to the heart. He was a brilliant trumpet player, but he was also a composer, and a compelling performer. "He had it all!" said his friend Sonny Rollins.  He died in a car crash on the way to a gig, when he was 27 years old.  Fortunately we have a number of recordings that he made before he died and you can hear what all the fuss is about when we feature the music of Clifford Brown tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.

Trumpeter Chris Botti came to fame as Sting's trumpet player and has been touring and recording with his own band for many years.  His beautiful sweet tone on the horn has won him many fans, and his creative sense of harmony will have you smiling as you listen to his music.  Chris Botti is performing at the Orpheum theater, Sunday night October 9th.  Listen to Monday night's 9 O'clock Special to hear the sounds of Chris Botti and win tickets to his show at the Orpheum.

Trumpeter Art Farmer's lyrical lines gave his bop-oriented style its own personality. Farmer studied piano, violin, and tuba before settling on trumpet. Art Farmer and his twin brother Addison were born in the midwest but grew up here in Arizona.  Learn more about Art Farmer and his sound tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.

Trumpeter and singer Chet Baker became the definition of cool jazz.  His brilliant improvisation and tender tones were like nothing else and his matinee idol good looks got him plenty of attention.  He worked with Stan Getz and Charlie Parker and created a sensation playing counterpoint solos with Gerry Mulligan and his baritone sax.  hear Chet Baker sing and play tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.

Lee Morgan, a legendary jazz trumpeter and composer, recorded from 1956 until a day before his death in February '72. He was influenced by Clifford Brown and Dizzy but had his own style and sound.  Hear the music of Lee Morgan Monday night at 9.
