Jimmy Smith

Jimmy Smith changed the way we hear the jazz organ.  He created a whole new language of blues and bebop that is part of the sound every B3 player uses today.  Hear the fun and fabulous genius of jazz giant Jimmy Smith tonight on the 9 O'clock Special, and Marty Ashby stops by to talk about his Christmas concert when jazz awakes at 8.

Double Header! Ray Charles and New Jazz Releases

It's a fun filled double header tonight! At 9, Blaise Lantana plays the lastest new jazz from young saxaphonist, Grace Kelly.  You'll hear the latest swinging B3 organ on Joey DeFrancesco's new CD, and guitarist Kenny Burrell says it all, solo on his latest release.  Start the jazz night at 8 with a Ray Charles party with "Georgia", "Busted", and a spirit filled "Another Saturday Night",  when Blaise gives away tickets to the Tempe Center for the Arts' Saturday Night Ray Charles show.  Tune in to win and to enjoy Brother Ray.

9 O'clock Jazz Special for 9/30

When it comes to jazz the DeFrancesco family is the Philly version of the Marsalis family.  Joey plays organ, Johnny plays guitar and it all started with Papa John.  Papa John and Joey now live here in Arizona and tonight Papa John comes by to talk about his career, his talented family and his jazz organ concert at the Kerr Cultural center next Wednesday night.  Hear some fun grooves and some good stories tonight on the 9 O'clock Special on KJZZ.
