Russell Malone

Guitarist Russell Malone is a self taught swing and bebop jazz player who started his career with Jimmy Smith in 1988 and worked with Harry Connick and diana Krall through the 1990s.  Today you'll hear him with his own quartet or playing with Diane Reeves or Sonny Rollins. His early influences were BB King and George Benson, so you can hear plenty of bles in Russelll's jazz.  Celebrate Russell Malone tonight in honor of his birthday tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.  Jazz awakes at 8.

 Hear some seriously spooky music, like the Monster Mash, Witchy Woman and some Old Black Magic for Halloween tonight at 8 and then at 9 enjoy the latest new releases by saxophonist Houston Person with his friend drummer Lewis Nash, and a  bluesy new CD from vocalist Lavern Baker. I'm your magical musical wizard and it's a night of delicious treats when jazz awakes at 8.

Clifford Brown & Poncho Sanchez

Trumpeter Clifford Brown died young but left an amazing legacy of bebop and ballads.  Hear what makes his sound so special tonight at 9.  Plus you'll hear the latest from Latin groove master Poncho Sanchez tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.  And we will be giving away tickets to hear Sarah Brightman at her spring concert.  So tune in for classic jazz and some free tickets. Lou Donaldson

When we get back to jazz on Friday night we'll groove with sax man Lou Donaldson who is best known for his soulful, bluesy approach to playing the alto Sax. Hear the best of Lou Donaldson from his work with Clifford Brown and Art Blakey to some Sassy Soul Strut, Friday night with Blaise Lantana on the 9 O'clock Special. 

Tierney Sutton

Tierney Sutton has beautiful tone and a joyful spirit in her singing.  She is performing this week at the Tempe Center for the Arts with the Turtle Island String Quartet.  Enjoy her sound and learn more about this innovative new project. Hear Tierney Sutton tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.

Anat Cohen

  Israeli clarinetist and saxaphonist Anat Cohen stops by K-Jazz tonight  to talk about her new album and her concert at the MIM.  She has done trad jazz, Brazilian and big band with the Diva orchestra.  Enjoy the music and spirit of Anat Cohen tonight on the 9 O'clock Special. 

New Release Special for 10/24

  Drummer and composer Winard Harper combines his tradition of swing with brilliant innovation on his latest release.  Tonight it's all new releases including work by Dizzy's long time in the pocket guitarist Ed Cherry, and pianist Kenny Drew.  Find out who's hot and what's cool on the 9 O'clock Special tonight.  Jazz awakes at 8!

Dizzy Gillespie

  Dizzy Gillespie was a force in jazz.  Many jazz giants got their start in his bands.  His wonderful spirit and remarkable talent are like no one else!  Hear the music of trumpeter, band leader and composer Dizzy Gillespie tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.  Jazz awakes at 8 after the pledge drive finishes tonight when you'll hear less patter more platter.
