awarded reservation status…for its planned casino site in Glendale.
For the second weekend in a row, a section
of freeway in the valley will be closed. The
Arizona Department of Transportation says part of the Piestewa Freeway will be
shut down for maintenance work.
One of Phoenix’s city councilmen is in Washington, D.C. for the second time in as many weeks. As KJZZ’s Nick Blumberg reports, he’s
calling attention to how Phoenix
and other U.S. cities will suffer after federal budget cuts.
Last month, the city of Glendale opened a new court specially designed for the mentally ill. Advocates say it’s a critical issue; according to an analysis of government data by the Treatment Advocacy Center, mentally ill people in Arizona are nearly ten times more likely to be in the criminal justice system than in hospitals.
Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers says the city has a good
opportunity to keep the Coyotes in town, even though Thursday night’s deadline
passed without a prospective owner coming up with the money to buy the team.
Glendale was the center of the football world this week, with the Fiesta Bowl. But the end of NFL games for the season in the city, and the lack of an NHL season so far are also affecting Glendale businesses.
The National Hockey League lockout is in its 74th day. The Phoenix Coyotes still don’t have an owner. But there is some good news for hockey in the desert after a decision Tuesday night in Glendale.
